Queen Street, Cardiff - A Grosvenor Series postcard from an era of elegance and wealth.

Queen Street, Cardiff - A Grosvenor Series postcard from an era of elegance and wealth. Originally named Crockherbtown, Queen Street was named in 1886 to honour Queen Victoria for her Golden Jubilee. Fuelled by explosive industrial wealth from the Welsh coal boom, the street was transformed from low grade domestic housing into the grand Victorian retail heart of the town. This postcard is held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

Queen Street, Cardiff - A W.H.S.& S.-"Strand Series." postcard stamped Bute Docks during January 1906.

Queen Street, Cardiff - A W.H.S.& S.-"Strand Series." postcard stamped Bute Docks during January 1906 to Daisy with confirmation that Daddy had arrived safely and that he hoped to be home sometime on Saturday. Probably a sailor ; you could imagine what lack of communication was like for those left at home in the days before mobile phones ; postcards were used by so many to reassure wives, sons and daughters over the years - oh, and a few mistresses! Another heritage postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

Queen Street, Cardiff in the 1950's.

Queen Street, Cardiff in the 1950's - Trolley buses feature and the view is precisely as I recall as a child walking amongst the shops and arcades whilst generally pratting about! Another postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]

Queen Street, Cardiff.

Queen Street, Cardiff - A strange 'Dainty Series' postcard posted in January 1903 to address in Nelson Square, Bradford. It looks like some impending doom is moving in on Cardiff and everyone seems to be obvious to the impending storm! Another postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001]
