Volume Twelve - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - further aspects - A History of Penarth Dock by Roy Thorne . . . The following names of people in authority show their various places of origin : -
The Bute Trustees made applications to Parliament in 1864 for an Act to provide additional shipping accommodation, and the T.V.R. and Penarth Dock Company opposed the scheme. The House of Lords refused the plan, and the Bute Trustees tried again in 1865 but it was again refused. By 1866 the average waiting period for a ship in Penarth Roads was four days and sometimes 300 vessels were waiting. Again in 1866 the Bute Trustees sought powers to build a dock and a junction lock to the East Dock, but sanction was only given later and the Roath Basin was opened in 1874. With this amount of waiting shipping it was understandable that the Penarth Promoters wanted to bring their dock into operation, but there were further delays. |
