1862 - Fatal Accident — Last Friday afternoon a most dreadful and fatal accident occurred at No. 6, Coal Staith, Penarth Tidal Harbour. At an inquest held before Lewis Reece, Esq., it transpired in evidence that the deceased William H. Edwards, was engaged in lowering the shoot, when the catch of the windlass gave way, and the iron handle fell with considerable force upon the poor fellow's head. A large portion of his skull was consequently driven in, which caused the brains to protrude from his ears and head. Medical advice was at once sent for to Cardiff, and as soon as possible Dr. Taylor was in attendance. The unfortunate man only lingered a few hours, when death put an end to his sufferings. — The jury returned a verdict of "Accidentally killed." - The Cardiff and Merthyr Guardian Glamorgan Monmouth and Brecon Gazette [156] [361] 17th May 1862.
