Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .
Volume Twelve - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - further aspects - Aerial Views - 1946 to 1981 . . .

6th July 1971 - Image No. 9 854 - A fine view of the Penarth Dock etc. -  look no pontoon -  just an outline on the plan!

Thanks to this series of aerial views, I have been able to confirm the secondary attempt to recover the steel body of the pontoon and to date these works and a plan precisely. Julie and myself left Penarth Dock Engineering Company at the end of 1970, married and moved to Yorkshire. To our best recollection, there was no work being undertaken to recover the pontoon from under the dam at that time following the previous failed attempt of Eddie Avoth & Company. The date of the aerial photograph is 6th July 1971, therefore, the works and subsequent superimposed plan above relate to the partial recovery of the pontoon between those dates - for the full story see Where is the final resting place of the pontoon? . . .

6th July 1971 - Image No. 9 856 - The head of the Penarth Dock clearly showing the excavated dam [A] and extent of the unauthorised tipping of uncontrolled waste into the dock along the northern quayside [B]. At [C] we have the works of Price Bros. joinery and at [D] the Billy Banks commonly known as 'Alcatraz' by the apprentices at the Penarth Dock Engineering Company Limited! Julie resided in Cawnpore Street, Cogan, [E] and the new cutting and road between the Merrie Harrier (A.K.A. the 'Happy Merrier' when drunk!) roundabout and the junction of Penarth Road and Windsor Road is shown at [F].
