Clearing the Holms, we make for the Foreland, having on our starboard side the islet of Sully, on which are the remains of a small ancient camp, and then Barry Island, about 300 acres in extent, and now connected with the shore. On the mainland are situated Barry Docks, Cardiff's successful competitor.

On our port side we have Bridgwater Bay, and the pleasant watering-place of Burham-on-Sea, with its warning light visible at a distance of 15 miles.

Just below it is the mouth of the river Parrett, flowing past Bridgwater a few miles inland, where the ill-fated Monmouth was received and proclaimed King prior to marching forth to his ignominious defeat at Sedgmoor.

Burnham has a fine sandy beach, extending for some miles, and first-class golf links are available for visitors. There is a concert pavilion on the esplanade, and the climate is bracing.

Two lighthouses at Burnham, one high, and the other low, are worked on the new electric " Robot " principle, without keepers.

We next pass the Breaksea Lightship, distant from us about a mile on the starboard side. Stretching away inland we see the Quantock Hills, rising to the height of 1,270 feet, and Dukery Beacon, 1,700 feet, " the haighest place in Exmoor, " as John Fry told John Ridd in " Lorna Doone. "

A horizon 500 miles in circuit and a panorama including portions of 15 counties, with the Bristol Channel stretching in full view for 120 miles, may be seen from Dunkery's summit on a clear day.

Watchet, Dunster, and Minehead, interesting places on this side, are now passed in succession, but they are situated too far for us to examine their salient features or surroundings, unless the boat is due to call at Minehead, where there is a pier belonging to Messrs. P. & A. Campbell Ltd. (pier dues, except for promenaders, discontinued).
