Mr. N. Bastian, assistant dock master, Barry Dock, retired on May 31, after 42 years in the service of the Taff Vale, Barry, and Great Western Companies. He went to sea at the age of 14, and served in various capacities from ship’s boy to second mate. Mr. Bastian entered the service of the Taff Vale Railway Company as dockgateman at Penarth Dock in 1887, and two years later joined the service of the Barry Company as berthingmaster at Barry Docks. He rose to piermaster in 1898, assistant deputy dockmaster in 1921, and assistant dockmaster a little later, which position he held until his retirement. A presentation was made to Mr. Bastian by Captain D. Irving, dockmaster, on behalf of the staff, and he was also the recipient of a gold watch from the channel pilots of Barry Docks. |
