Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

about . . .

Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - The construction of the dock . . .

1865 – The dual level railway system servicing the coal tips using gravity for trucks to exit from the coal tips. These inclines were later amended probably because of impact damage to coal trucks.

1865 – The beautiful symmetry and workmanship of the arched masonry quays 46 feet tall and 13 feet thick! Also see the hydraulic house which provided power to the tips and lock gates and these two dockside hoists.

1865 - Another fine view of the hydraulic house and hoists, sadly, now mostly buried and lost.

This series of photographic records of the excavation and building of Penarth Dock is the work of Mr. Joseph Collings a local photographer. His use of large 12" x 10" glass negatives assured him of meticulously capturing the fine detail evident within these images. He died in 1875.

1864 - Work in progress upon the southern construction of the sea locks and basin quayside. In the background the Custom House is being built.
