Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - The construction of the dock . . .

1864 - Constructing the two coal tips situated half way along the basin on the southern side. The Customs House is under construction in the left of the image. The wonderful vaulted, arched masonry of Radyr stone is a tribute to the skills of the masons employed in the construction of the dock.

c.1865 – Construction almost complete. The Penarth Harbour, Dock and Railway Co. attracted investment from many different quarters, including Charles Darwin. His account book of 1864 records a payment of £1,500 on the 15th September for shares in the company. [201] His total investment was £7,500 (equivalent to c.£918,750 in 2019).
