Volume Three - The Pontoon Era - The delay in preparation of the pontoon berth . . .

The image left is dated the 26th June 1909 and entitled “the launch of the pontoon” from “A Taff Vale Railway Miscellany” which seems to confirm that a slipway is in use on the incline adjacent to the pumping engine house.

The map on the left shows the inclined dock wall with the superimposed (best fit) OS map of 1955 complete with pontoon. Note that the dock wall is now vertical and at a different location from the earlier map and image.

The delay referred too in the previous articles of a few months was probably due to the requirement to build a vertical quay wall at the western end of the dock, infill behind the wall and then modify the existing solid masonry of the northern quayside to accept the eight shore connecting arms which are situated within vertical slots in the quay wall to effectively moor the pontoon at the quayside. A great deal of work indeed and the pontoon was not made available for use until March the following year, 1910.

Below are views of the engineering works of the Penarth Pontoon, Slipway and Ship Repairing Company Limited under construction following completion of the new dock wall.
