Volume Eight - Pre-Victorian to the present day - more aspects - A brief history of Trinity House lightvessels . .

LV12 and LV13 are shown in this general arrangement drawing which I found in an excellent book named 'Lighthouses & Lightships' by Lee Chadwick [280]

This photograph of the mirror apparatus from a Trinity House lightvessel is also from the book and shows the intricate mechanism by which the light remains horizontal in even the most stormy seas.

lightship on Penarth pontoon

I prepared an image which shows the relative size of LV12 and LV13 lightvessels of 137 feet overall length in comparison to the pontoon of the Penarth Pontoon, Slipway & Shiprepairing Co. Ltd. (at just over 380 feet long). It provides a clear indication of the scale of vessels which could be accommodated.
