In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s, my grandfather used to walk into Grangetown and Tiger Bay to play piano in the local pubs and clubs on a Saturday night. This was the same time as a teenage Shirley Bassey was singing in the Tiger Bay clubs there to earn extra money. My grandfather may have played for her in the Baroness of Windsor Pub in Grangetown.

1b) Raymond Macey - Jim’s son, Raymond James Macey was born in 1926. He was my uncle.

Over the years, Raymond owned four boats, mooring them on the banks of the Ely River. As a result, he became involved in the management of the Penarth Motorboat and Sailing Club based on the banks of the Ely River and was for a time its Commodore. He would be responsible for laying and moving the moorings.

Raymond’s uncle Walter (known as Buzz) died in 1973. Raymond agreed to take on the nickname, the third generation to do so. He also loved music, and would often be seen dancing to a singer or band in ‘The Pilot’, Queen’s Road, even into his eightieth year. When he was 80, he had a big birthday card from all his friends. Mam always said that ‘Everybody loved Raymond’.
