2) The Mules Chain

2a) William Mules - My mother’s maternal great grandparents were William Mules and Elizabeth (nee Smeeth). Albert came from a prodigious family. His grandfather was one of 6. His father was one of 8. He was one of 10. He out-did them all by having 17 children.

He was born in Marhamchurch, just south of Bude, Cornwall in 1847. Over the estuary in Penarth, the Clive Windsor family began to build Penarth Docks in 1860. It was opened in 1865. During this time, the influx of over 1,000 navvies (migrant construction workers) meant that most lived in a large camp of tents. House construction began in 1864, with John Street being the first to go up.
