Mam was born in 1931. She remembers having her picture taken on a sailing ship in Penarth Dock around 1945. It may have been the Pamir or the Passat on an earlier visit. She also had a photo taken in 1950, when Brian’s father was watchman on the ships.

In 1945, the war was coming to an end, Mam joined the Girls Nautical Training Corps, which was open to girls from 12 to 18. They met at ‘The Hut’, the cadet’s hall at the top of Albert Road. Leader Denise Llewellyn trained them to march and taught sea cadet skills.
