Postscript - Salop Street

Salop Street was built on land owned by the Windsor-Clive family, also known as the Earles of Plymouth. The architect was Robert Forrest. The street was named after the Windsor family’s home county of Shropshire. Salop is an earlier alternative name to the county. Construction began around 1863, to house families attracted to the area by the opportunity to work Penarth docks (opened in 1865). Because of this, the street was very cosmopolitan. The south side was developed first. The south side also had a unique layout, with no less than 5 accesses in the terrace leading to stables in the rear gardens.
