Volume Eight - Pre-Victorian to the present day - more aspects - Cardiff, Penarth and Barry Coaltrimmers' Union . . .

The meeting was called by the men's leaders for the purpose of ascertaining whether there was any dissension in the ranks of the coaltrimmers concerning the holiday question. Early in the meeting there were some signs of dissension, but this was founded upon misapprehension, and the motion approving of the steps already taken by the leaders and instructing them to meet the employers when called upon to do so was carried unanimously. The employers intend meeting to consider the men's proposals on Tuesday, and a joint conference will be held the following day. Evening Express  [135] [361]  2nd May 1910.

A lapel badge of the Cardiff, Penarth and Barry Trimmers' Bowling Association illustrates that there was a good social advantage to membership of the union and no doubt some strong competition between the home team and visiting trimmers! Date not known.

◊ 1911 - Seamen's Strike - In relation to the seamen's strike the Welsh Journal 'Morgannwg' concludes in an article: 'Captain Tupper and the 1911 seamen's strike in Cardiff' (Vol. 14 - 1970):-

'The reluctance of the trimmers to join the seamen can be seen from the minutes of Cardiff, Penarth and Barry Coal Trimmers Union. The trimmers were a local union, with effective control over the coal-trimming trade and earning very high wages.
