Volume Eight - Pre-Victorian to the present day - more aspects - George Wehrley - Photographer . . .

Father, Carl Frederick Wehrley was occasionally engaged as an interpreter when German speaking seamen found themselves before the local police court as did a seaman who was fined, during August 1903, £2 for disobeying the orders of his Captain at sea.

In September 1903, George, son of Carl, was reported in the Barry Dock News [140] [361] when he came 6th in a time of 49 min. 20 sec. whilst taking part in a Boy's Walking Match over a course of 4 miles and half a length at Cogan. I presume that George went to school at Cogan but I am unable to find evidence to confirm this statement.

On the 10th February 1905, Carl Wehrley had applied for and was granted a license to run a billiard room in Penarth as reported by the Barry Dock News [140] [361]. However, it seems that he continued his jeweller's activities but fell foul of the law and was brought before the Penarth Police Court in February 1907 for tampering with an electric meter at his premises. The managing engineer of the Penarth Electric Light Company, when passing the shop in Glebe Street with a fellow company director, viewed the meter through the shop window. Upon investigation the meter was found to have stopped registering the electricity usage even although the lights were on in the shop. A small piece of wire had been inserted inside the meter which prevented the motor within the meter from operating. Carl Wehrley pleaded his innocence to the Court but the magistrate imposed a fine of £5. - Cardiff Times [019] [361] 2nd February 1907.

The following year, 1908, at the Penarth Dock Regatta in the 100 Yards Open Handicap race, Leopold Wehrley, elder brother of George, came 3rd. - Evening Express [135] [361] 7th September 1908.

Photographic Pictures of Ships

A series of advertisements published in the classified columns during 1910 confirmed that George Wehrley had become an avid photographer of ships and shipping at Penarth - The North Wales Express [361] [376] 17th June 1910.
