left : The South Wales Daily News [325] [361] advertisement of the 2nd July 1898 relating to the sale of stock of Carl Wehrley.

The Evening Express [135] [361] of the 15th July 1898 sadly reported 'Law Costs - Carl Wehrley, watchmaker, of Penarth (who was represented by Mr. Cadle) said that had more or less been in debt constantly for several years past, and had spent about £170 in law costs. - The examination was closed.'

The South Wales Echo [163] [361] of 19th August 1899 carried an advert for a domestic servant 'General wanted, clean ; good character ; no washing ; good wages. - Wehrley, 8 Windsor-rd., Penarth.'

By 1903 it seems that Carl was again working as a jeweller since the Evening Express [135] [361] of the 7th April reported that three men had stolen a watch value £6. 10s., a clock value 10s 9d. and a photo frame value 1s., the property of Carl Wehrley, jeweller, 8, Windsor-road, Penarth. So maybe life for George aged 12 years was improving and Carl was recovering from the undoubted setback of his bankruptcy five years earlier.

◊ Windsor Road, Penarth - Windsor Road devoid of traffic with pedestrians and shoppers visible on the pavements and evidence that Carl Wehrley is very much back in business!
