Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

about . . .

Volume Nine - Pre-Victorian to the present day - even more aspects - The Custom House and Dock Offices . . .

• June 1865 - The opening ceremony for Penarth Dock was held on Saturday 10th June 1865, three years behind the original schedule, due to a number of factors including the dispute with the main contractor Messrs. Smith and Knight, and the Directors of the Penarth Harbour, Dock and Railway Company, which ultimately resulted in Chancery Action being taken in 1861 to 'restrain the Company from finishing the partially completed works.'

• September 1865 - Penarth - Buildings - 'The Custom-house and offices are fast approaching completion.' . . . 'As might be expected, the docks continue very destitute of shipping. The 'Cory' and a few smaller craft, are all that have entered lately, and until the place becomes better known, this state of things may be supposed to exist.' - Cardiff Times [019] [361] 1st September 1865.

• October 1865 - Penarth - Custom House and Dock Offices - 'A fine clock, which was supplied by Mr. Dent, has been placed in position at these offices. It adds greatly to the beauty of the buildings.' - Cardiff Times [019] [361] 13th October 1865.

I assumed that the clock referenced was the Customs House clock, (see image left) however, the website for the Wales and Marches Horological Society states:-

'It is possible that Dent's clock of 1865 for Penarth's dock buildings had a gravity escapement, but this was destroyed by fire in the 1990s and nothing now remains of it.' [430]
