Volume Nine - Pre-Victorian to the present day - even more aspects - The Introduction of 20 ton Coal Wagons - 1923   . . .

With regard to the number of wagons necessary and deadweight hauled, based upon an average yearly shipment of 37 million tons, some 3,200,000 wagons would be required if conveyed in 12-ton wagons, whereas this number would be reduced to 1,850,000 wagons if 20-ton wagons were used. It will therefore be seen that the tare weights in the aggregate will be reduced from about 23 million tons deadweight to 16,200,000 tons.

The present position is that there are over 1,000 20-ton wagons working between the Collieries and the ports of Cardiff, Swansea, Newport, Barry, Port Talbot and Penarth.

The number of tips available for dealing with the 20-ton wagons, as at December, 1928, was : -
