Volume Eleven - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - some more aspects - Large Testing Machines in South Wales, 1829-1906 . . . One striking test demonstrated the superiority of side-welded links over end-welded links. Wire ropes were also tested, including one galvanised flexible rope of six-strands 24 wires. It broke at 34¼ tons. A patent cap, invented by Mr Becker, Cardiff, was tested on the rope, and it stood the strain equal to the breaking strain of the rope without slipping. At the conclusion of the tests the President of the South Wales Branch of the association, Mr Taliesin Richards (agent for Lockett's Merthyr collieries at Mardy) proposed a cordial vote of thanks to Sir W. T. Lewis (who had written much regretting his inability to receive the visitors) for permission to make the visit, and to Mr Penn for the trouble he had taken to make the experiments interesting and instructive. The resolution was heartily adopted. - The Cardiff Times [019] [361] 12th December 1908. |
