Volume Eight - Pre-Victorian to the present day - more aspects - Shipwright's Working Rules and Price List - 1937 - 1959

I've been a hands-on engineer for 50 years this year (2015) and I do not know what a 'Spudder', 'Beetle', 'Crooked or Horsing Iron' is! Perhaps an aside here to illustrate the complexity of the Shipwright's trade and the sheer breadth of knowledge the average skilled man would have needed to work at a ship repairing facility.

For exmple, these steam winch and windlass diagrams are taken from C. H. Bailey's Book of Useful Information, Price 7/6d. [234] The book provides an insight into the information needed to hand by the shipwright in the course of his day.
