An extract from the 1891 Census for Penarth & District

The Evening Express [135] [361] of the 15th September 1892 reported upon the 'Penarth Boat Club' where on Wednesday afternoon a most interesting boat race took place in which Mr. Wehrley, jeweller, was the timekeeper. Obviously, father Carl, whom, it appears was integrated into the community and held in trust and esteem.

However, by June 1898 things were not so good as the same newspaper reported on the 4th June under the heading 'Gazette News - Bankruptcy Acts. 1883 and 1890 - Receiving Orders' where Carl Wehrley, jeweller, of Windsor-road, Penarth was named. George would have been only about 7 or 8 years old at this date.

The London Gazette [100] of 17th June 1893 recorded that Carl Wehrley, who was at this date residing and carrying on a business at 8 Windsor Road, Penarth as a watchmaker and jeweller was to attend a first hearing at the Official Receiver's Office, 29 Queen-street, Cardiff at 11 a.m. on the 28th and a a public hearing at the Townhall, Cardiff at 10 a.m. on the 15th July of the same year.
